Frequently Asked Questions about Cavway X1

These are the questions I am most frequently asked:

1. How can I trigger a delayed shot or measurement? 

To trigger delayed measurement, you must first set the Shot Delay option in the Option menu to a value greater than 0 s. After this is set, when the laser is on, press and hold the DIST button for 2 seconds to start the delayed measurement. This design allows users to use delayed shot when only make the leg shot. When measuring splays, users can continue measuring without delay, without needing to enter the menu to change the settings.

2. What is the size of the tripod mounting thread on the Cavway X1?

Standard 1/4"-20 UNC thread.

3. Does the Cavway X1 use the same calibration method as the DistoX?

Yes. They use the same calibration method, and we recommend performing the calibration by hand. If a jig is used for calibration, it must include an adjustment mechanism that allows the laser spot to remain at the same position while the device is rotated.

4. How to Verify the Accuracy of the Device?

To verify the accuracy of the device, first measure the distance, azimuth, and inclination from Station A to Station B. Then measure back from Station B to Station A and compare the results:

The measured distance should be the same in both directions.
The azimuth should differ by 180°.
The inclination should have the same magnitude but the opposite sign.

You can also verify the measurements by comparing them with those obtained using another cave surveying instrument, such as a DistoX or BRIC. Measure the distance, azimuth, and inclination from Station A to Station B with both devices and compare the results.

Do not place the two devices side by side and compare their readings directly, as they will interfere with each other's magnetic sensors, resulting in inaccurate azimuth measurements.

5. When Should the Device Be Recalibrated?

If the device frequently displays ACC ERR, first make sure that the surrounding environment is free from magnetic interference. Check that you are not wearing a watch, that the device is not too close to a headlamp or other magnetic objects, and that there are no significant ferromagnetic materials in the cave.

If magnetic interference has been ruled out and ACC ERR continues to occur frequently, the device should be recalibrated.
